What is the Crucial Role of Mindset and Environment in Achieving Personal Growth and Success?

In this blog post, learn the important roles these crucial components play in life, how they are interconnected, and their impact in our journey towards achieving personal growth and success. Let's discuss each component in depth...

  1. Mindset

As defined, mindset refers to the established set of attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions that shape how a person thinks, interprets situations, and responds to challenges in life. Basically, it is the mental framework through which an individual views themselves, others, and the world around them. This plays a crucial role in our lives as it forges paths we ought to take, shapes our reality, and ultimately determines our future. Your mindset can either bring you higher beyond your current situation or keep you stagnant and deter you from your personal growth and potential success. You've probably heard this statement before, and this is quoted by the famous Bill Gates that says, "If you're born poor, it's not your mistake. If you die poor, it's your mistake." This brings a profound, new meaning to the very essence of how your mindset can change everything. You may be born into a poor family and that's totally out of your control and responsibility. It's not your fault that you're born into that life. But we must understand that we have the agency over our own lives and lies within us is the responsibility of the choices we make that shape the future we make for ourselves. If we die poor, that's on us and we are accountable for that. It's our fault and we cannot blame our circumstances or the people around us.

I've heard stories of great leaders, visionaries, and influential people in the world across time and generations that started from their own, unique challenging situations but changed the outcome of their lives because of their grit, vision, and mindset. However, I haven't actually seen it happen in person and only seemed like a legend in the past. But there is one significant person in my life that changed my whole perspective of myself, the world around me, and the endless possibilities of who I can become and what I can achieve. And that is my Pastor, Roger Claro. He was born into a family who only knew of life lived in a small island, with people around him having the same way of life and mindset, that they were contented where they were. He told us a story one time, and it was a time when he was a young boy together with his friends, and an airplane flew by them as they gazed into the sky above them. And he said to them, "One day, I'm going to ride on that airplane." His friends ridiculed him, laughed at him, and thought he was crazy. They said it was impossible, and in reality, it seemed impossible for a young boy born in a small island, who has no access to education that can potentially lead to a decent paying job, experiences financial constraints and lack of resources daily, and just goes out to fish day in and day out. But he had grit, vision, and a mindset that changed the course of his life. Long story short, he had now got on multiple airplanes and have even gone abroad. At an early age, he set out and did the impossible. All the odds were against him, but he believed and saw the future ahead with hope and joyful excitement rather than looking at his present reality with dread and hopelessness. I would never forget this story to this day.

It made me think, if it was possible for him then it's possible for me. And it's possible for you. Endless possibilities lie ahead of you. See it and believe it. You have God-given potential in you and a bright future that God has in plan for you. You are so much more than your current situation. This had also been my stumbling block in my journey. I've always defined myself by my past failures and had changed my outlook in life. I've always been a realist in life, gravitating towards negativity because of the mindset I had. In every situation, I always thought of the worst that could happen. I've gone through failure after failure, allowing it to define me as such, and therefore it became my reality. I woke up day after day defeated, feeling like failure, and anticipating the worst in everything I do. And when things get rough, I perceive things to fail because of the outlook that I had.

Fortunately, I learned along the way that our mindset plays a crucial role in life because it affects our perception of things in life or things that happen in our life, which ultimately shapes our reality and determine our future outcomes. See life in a positive light that even when you go through tough times, you can perceive them as possibilities, opportunities, or avenues for growth and breakthroughs rather than threats, insurmountable obstacles, and impossibilities.

To achieve personal growth and success, adapt a growth mindset. This term is coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, which states that "a growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, learning, and persistence. People with a growth mindset embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, and view failure as a learning opportunity." Embrace a growth mindset today for there are endless possibilities that lie ahead of you, of who you can become and what you can achieve.

  1. Environment

Environment plays a crucial role in growth, and ultimately success. Imagine planting two identical seeds. One is placed in fertile soil with adequate sunlight and water, while the other is planted in dry, rocky soil with limited sunlight and water. Despite the seeds being identical in potential, the first grows and thrives into a healthy plant, while the second struggles to survive or may wither and die. Just as plants need the right conditions to flourish, people need to be in the right environment to grow and be able to reach their full potential.

I am an avid fan of chess. I used to compete in school and have tried joining a few local tournaments when I was younger. I may have stopped competing, but it's one of the apps on my phone I still regularly play, and I still follow some of the grandmasters all over the world, world championship games, and a lot of content about chess. Although he's not my favorite one, there's this one grandmaster whose life story taught me a significant life lesson. He is Wesley So, a Filipino-American chess grandmaster who is ranked 11th in the world. He is born in Cavite, Philippines, and emerged as a chess prodigy, achieving grandmaster status at 14. He represented the Philippines in international competitions until 2014. In those years, he had exceptional performance, was ranked the strongest player in the world under 16 years of age, and the youngest to ever surpass a 2600-rating mark. However, as his career progressed in the Philippines, he faced significant challenges that limited his ability and potential. He aimed to advance his chess career but felt that the opportunities in the Philippines were limited. The Philippine chess system lacked the infrastructure and funding to fully support elite players like Wesley. He struggled to access high-level training, strong competition, and adequate financial backing. He also found the chess culture in the Philippines restrictive. He noted that "connections" often mattered more than merit, and he felt unsupported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). Conflicts arose when he sought opportunities to compete internationally, with the NCFP occasionally denying him the freedom to choose events that aligned with his goals, leading to conflicts between his academic pursuits and chess commitments.

In 2014, Wesley So made the life-changing decision to transfer his chess federation to the United States. Instead of staying in the Philippines, an environment that kept him in a box, with people that became a 'lid' in his life, stunting his growth and deterring him to reach his full potential, he decided to step out into an environment that would nurture and facilitate his growth, and allowed him to flourish. The U.S. chess scene offered access to world-class coaches, facilities, and tournaments, enabling him to compete at the highest levels. The U.S. provided him with a community that valued and nurtured his talent. He found mentors like Rex Sinquefield, a major chess benefactor, who supported his development. He was able to have freedom from the constraints of the NCFP and could focus entirely on improving his skills and competing internationally. As sad as this is, as I am born and raised in the Philippines, Wesley So’s journey is a powerful example of how your environment facilitates your growth and how it propels you to your success. Talent alone isn’t enough; it needs to be nurtured in a space that encourages development, provides opportunities, and aligns with one’s goals and vision. His story serves as a reminder that sometimes, achieving personal growth and success requires you to be in the right environment. You can have the right mindset, right set of skills and gifts, but being in the wrong environment will stunt your growth and deter you from your path to success.

Maybe you find yourself in a place of stagnation—a dry, barren, unproductive season where progress feels out of reach. Perhaps you're working toward a goal but feel stuck, unable to move forward no matter how hard you try. You might be striving to improve at something, yet feelings of inadequacy and incompetence make your efforts seem futile. In moments like these, it's natural to ask, "What's wrong with me?" But what if the issue isn’t with you at all? What if the real problem lies in your environment? Instead of doubting your abilities, try asking a different question: "Am I in the right place?" "Am I surrounded by the right people?" Maybe you’re trying to lose weight or adopt healthier habits, but you’re surrounded by people who lack discipline or people who mock your efforts. Or perhaps you’re learning a new skill—like playing an instrument or improving your public speaking—but the people around you ridicule your mistakes instead of encouraging your growth.

The truth is, the environment you’re in plays a critical role in your personal growth and potential for achieving success. A supportive, nurturing environment can propel you toward your goals, while a toxic or unsupportive one can hold you back.

  1. Achieving Personal Growth and Success

In conclusion, personal growth and success isn’t just about what we achieve externally. It’s about how we rewire our thinking and create an environment that nurtures our goals. As what Norman Vincent Peale has quoted, "Change your thoughts, and you change your world. Change your environment, and you empower those thoughts to flourish." Both your mindset and your environment play a crucial role in your life. You must have the right mindset and must be in the right environment for you to flourish in your God-given gift and potential. Looking at yourself now and the situation you are in, you may probably have a hard time wrapping your head around the possibility of achieving your seemingly farfetched goals. But let me tell you, it's possible. You have a God-given gift and potential in you waiting to be unleashed. You just have to believe it and see yourself the way God sees you—that you are beautiful, valuable, gifted, and made for more. Also, you must allow yourself to grow and flourish in the right environment, surrounding yourself with the right people—perhaps the right workplace, the right friends or associations, the right mentors or accountability partners—who will encourage your growth, affirm your progress, and help you when you need support.
